House Bill 98, the Ohio High School Career Opportunity Act, which gives equal opportunity for representatives from colleges and universities, the armed forces, skilled trades, businesses and charitable organizations to present information on future career and post-graduate opportunities to high school students, was passed by a members in a unanimous vote. On April 25, 2017 in Lakeland at the Florida Skills State Conference, Olivia Bruening, a Senior at River Oak Technical College in Live Oak Florida, won 1st place in the Masonry Contest. Olivia competed with 14 of the best secondary masonry students in Florida and won 1st Place! Olivia will represent Florida at Skills USA In Louisville on June 22nd. Olivia has been competing in the FMAEF Masonry Showcase in Starke Florida for the last two years. In February, Olivia was part of the River Oak Technical College Masonry Team that finished 3rd out of seven schools competing. Olivia scored the highest points for her team and advanced to the Florida Skills State Masonry Contest. Olivia has outstanding masonry skills and she has been recognized by her school and the school board, as well as the masonry industry in Florida, for her hard work in masonry. Those in attendance witnessed industry producers A-1 Block, Argos Ready Mix, LLC., CEMEX Construction Materials Florida, LLC., Maschmeyer Concrete Company of Florida, Inc., Prestige Concrete Products, Supermix/Superblock and Titan Florida, LLC. become the first to sign on to support the Act by voluntarily contributing to the Florida Concrete Masonry Education Council, beginning April 1st, 2015. The council, appointed by Governor Rick Scott, is tasked with bringing together masonry manufacturers and contractors in an effort to plan and conduct training programs, improving access to masonry education, developing outreach programs to ensure diversity and informing the public about the sustainability and economic benefits of concrete masonry products. “This marks a momentous day for our industry and we look forward to implementing these important educational programs for masons across the state,” said FCMEC Chairman Troy Maschmeyer. “We've been collectively working on this program for a very long time and we are enthusiastic about the many benefits it will bring to the industry."
