10/31/2014

On Thursday, October 30, 2014, the Masonry Education Foundation's Julio Vazquez (Apprentice Coordinator) and Deb Bartolucci (Marketing & Education) attended the 100 Black Men of South Florida's 4th Annual Career Fair & College Expo at the Miami Dade Fairgrounds.  The event was well attended with over 4000 area high school students bused in from around the county.  The students had been prepped by the 100 Black Men of South Florida organization as part of their mentoring program, and brought their resumes, SAT scores and a professional attitude in hopes to impress the colleges, trade schools and area employers in attendance.  The MEF interviewed several current NCCER pre-apprentice candidates and consequently has a new list of potential masonry apprentices for the Miami program that is held at William H. Turner Technical Arts High School.  For more information, please contact Julio Vazquez Julio@masonryeducation.org or Deb Bartolucci deb@floridamasonry.com

On November 4th, Floridians will be making a critical choice for Governor. Governor Scott and Former Governor Crist’s records are quite different.

These are the facts:

  • During Charlie Crist’s time in office, Florida lost 828,800 private-sector jobs. Since Governor Scott took office, Florida businesses have added more than 643,100 new private-sector jobs as of August 2014.
  • During Charlie Crist’s time in office, unemployment tripled – going from 3.5% to 11.1%. Today, with Governor Scott in office, unemployment is down to 6.3%. Florida’s unemployment has dropped 50% faster than the national rate and we are leading the nation with the 2nd largest decrease.
  • Governor Scott eliminated over 3,000 state regulations on job creators and streamlined state government bureaucracy to help, not hinder, job creation.

Tyler Kercher
Executive Director
Florida Skills USA
Tyler Kercher, Executive Director of the Florida SkillsUSA program attended the Masonry Education Foundation Board meeting on October 8, 2014 to discuss the importance of skills training in high schools.

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. Skills USA helps each student excel. They provide educational programs, events and competitions that support career and technical education (CTE) in the nation’s classrooms.

The SkillsUSA program has proven to be very successful.  99% of students participating in the Skills USA programs graduate from high school, as opposed to the national average of 80%.  SkillsUSA students participate in a program that provides not only the trade skills, but offers a complete framework for success.  This framework provide students with three areas of concentration:
• Technical skills specific to their trade, real-world and hands-on experience, workplace safety, etc.
• "21st Century Skills" or workplace skills training consisting of communications, teamwork, decision-making, planning, organization, management and ultimately leadership.
• "Soft Skills Training" or positive personal skills to help create an employee who is flexible, personable, adaptable, and shows the ability to get along well with others.

The Skills USA program has been around for over 50 years (formerly known as VICA), and is the largest nationwide student organization.  Over 335,000 students, 4117 schools, 17,100 instructors in all 50 states and four territories participate in this valuable program annually.

All Masonry Education Foundation apprentices are eligible to participate in in the Skills USA competitions held on a regional level in Florida, then competing nationally in Kansas City.
