Masonry Wall Design: Single-Wythe
Moisture penetration through exterior walls is a concern on every project (or – it should be a concern on every project!). Single-wythe concrete block construction does a great job in preventing water from entering the interior of your building but there are several important “belts and suspenders” that should be included in your design to make sure your masonry wall does the best job possible.

So, what do we consider a single-wythe wall? There are three major types of masonry walls built in Florida. The very best masonry wall to prevent water passage (we call it The World’s Best Wall!!) is called a double-wythe cavity wall and contains a drainage/air space between two separate wythes or “layers” of masonry. Water that makes it through the first wythe runs down the back side of the wall and is discharged to the exterior through flashing and weeps.

Construction Workers in Short Supply

Contractors are having difficulty finding craft workers such as carpenters and electricians, now that the industry is recovering from the downturn, the Associated General Contractors of America said Wednesday in a new report.

Only 11 contractors in Florida were represented in AGC's survey of about 1,000 contractors nationwide, but the problem is not a new one. The contractors association identified a growing shortage in 2013. FULL STORY >

MAF Co-Location Partners @ SEBC

For the fourth year in a row, the Masonry Association of Florida (MAF) was a co-location partner with the Florida Home Builders Association (FHBA) at the Southeast Builders Conference in Orlando, Florida. The show was held at the Orange County Convention Center, West Concourse and hosted close to 3000 builders and construction associates.

The MAF through the Masonry Education Foundation (MEF) provided 11 continuing education courses to SEBC attendees. Architects, engineers and home builders took part in classes about the MAF PNNL Energy research, Preventing Moisture Penetration in Masonry Construction, and watched a live masonry demonstration narrated by Don Beers, PE and performed by Steve Meggs, master mason and current employee of Argos. Thank you to everyone who participated to make this a great opportunity to educate our target market about the benefits of masonry construction!

Wesley Chapel townhome community mired in litigation over shoddy construction

The Bay at Cypress Creek lies behind black iron gates, 176 beige townhouses tucked away in a neatly manicured neighborhood along clean streets.

This is all, of course, at a distance. Upon closer inspection, lines of discolored paint snake around the facades where cracks have been patched. The stucco is warped and bubbling from water damage. Construction crews have gutted one of the buildings.
