At World of Concrete

Algonquin, Il., February 11, 2020 — The 21st MCAA Masonry Skills Challenge was held on February 5, 2020 during MASONRY MADNESS® at the World of Concrete. The competition is designed to showcase the best apprentices the industry has to offer.

The MCAA Masonry Skills Challenge is a competition to demonstrate the skills training in the industry, challenging winning apprentices from regional U.S. and foreign competitions to determine the top masonry apprentices at each level. The spotlight is on the world’s finest young masons, and focuses attention on careers in the masonry industry.

Each contestant was presented with a project drawing appropriate to their skill level just moments before the competition began. Contestants had three hours to construct their respective project using the materials provided. Final projects looked great, and apprentices and instructors should be proud of the hard work. Judges were impressed with the quality of the apprentices’ construction, and had the tough decision of choosing the winners.

After the judges completed their scoring using the MCAA’s new scoring app with Sonim XP8 smartphones running the MCAA Perks Program’s Sprint network, the results were announced.

An Interview with Skilled-Trades Evangelist Jim Painter

Longtime building industry leader works to attract workers

Members of the Painter family have been masons since the early 20th Century, and Painter Masonry has operated for 50 years.

The company, which laid bricks and cement blocks for many of the buildings at the University of Florida and other parts of Greater Gainesville, won’t continue for another generation.  No family member is ready to continue Painter Masonry’s legacy, and none of the workers have stepped up to take over.

What’s more, it’s harder and harder to find workers who are willing to take on the arduous work of building the future – one brick at a time – in the Florida sun.

On Friday, February 8, 2019, Robert Ball, Vice President of Coastal Masonry, Masonry Association of Florida (MAF) Southeast Chapter President and Donna Hinson, MAF Executive Director represented the association's apprentice programs and masonry industry at the 1st Annual Junior Achievement Inspire Event.  The educational job fair featured a concrete block/masonry demonstration by Central Broward Construction (Justin Lord, Owner Central Broward Construction and MAF State Board Vice Chairman).  Over 2000 students attended and were exposed to the masonry industry and construction trades.

Ken Urquhart, Workforce Employment Manager for Junior Achievement of South Florida thanked the MAF for their participation:

"Thank you for reaching out about getting kids involved in the masonry specialty, and the construction industry in general.  I agree that this is a great avenue for the kids to get involved.  I will be in touch in the near future about some of our upcoming events and opportunities.

From all of us at Junior Achievement, we truly value your relationship and collaborating with you going forward."
