The month of January has been a busy one for the Masonry Association of Florida, holding three masonry courses, and issuing over 700 CEU’s to Florida masonry industry professionals.
The video-taping of the Masonry Construction & Inspection Certification Workshop for the AIA Florida Distance Learning Program, and the soon-to-be-launched online certification program for engineers, contractors and building officials was completed in Tallahassee on January 13th and 14th to rave reviews! The next week saw Don Beers, putting in more miles as he travelled to the Seminole State College, Wharton Smith Center for Construction to provide a 2-hour masonry education program to more than 30 students. And finally, last-but-not-least, the MAF held a Masonry Workshop in Orlando this past Friday and Saturday. Seminole State College Wharton Smith Center for Construction Heathrow, Florida On Tuesday, January 26, 2016 the MAF provided instruction to the SSSC Wharton Smith Center for Construction. The course was attended by approximately 30 students enrolled in college's construction training program. The program was arranged by Joe Sorenson, SSC construction Program Instructor and Kevin McCoy of Argos. Don Beers, PE, MAF Staff Engineer provided a 2-hour program covering the topics of Energy Efficiency in Masonry Construction, Masonry vs. Hurricanes & Tornadoes, and Florida's Heart of Stone, a promotional introduction into the history of masonry in the state of Florida. The Wharton-Smith Center for Construction, part of Seminole State's School of Engineering, Design and Construction, offers programs grounded in academic course work, site visits and practical application of industry principles. This is part of a larger program introducing concrete and masonry education to the students of Florida Universities. As part of the Masonry Association's ongoing partnership with the American Institute of Architects Florida chapter, the Masonry Construction & Inspection Workshop began filming at the Liberty Bar in Tallahassee, Florida yesterday and will wrap up today. Stay tuned for the online coursework beginning April 2016! For questions, contact Deb Bartolucci deb@floridamasonry.com or Don Beers don@floridamasonry.com.

annie.martin@news-jrnl.com DELAND Like any good foreman, Greg Gebben expects his crew to do the job right. That means his workers must measure wood beams within a quarter-inch of the desired length. And like any good teacher, Gebben expects students to correct sloppy work. That means his DeLand High School students run to the hardware store if they cut a board too short. "Builders are not going to bring truckloads of wood for you to make mistakes on," Gebben told a roomful of students. "It comes out of your paycheck." Gebben designs his in-class projects to be as close to real life as possible because he wants students to be able to step onto job sites after they graduate with little additional training. Soon students in Volusia County's construction academies will have access to real job sites through a new internship program that comes at a time when local builders say the lack of available skilled workers is limiting the growth of their business and driving up construction prices. The school district is linking up with the Volusia Building Industry Association and a nonprofit organization that will help connect students with paid internships in areas like carpentry, electrical, masonry.
