Painter's Corner - MCAA Magazine What can I do about congestion? The short answer is take an anti-histamine and call your doctor. Oh, not that type of congestion! That’s a sinus problem and all in your head anyway! Congestion in a concrete masonry unit (CMU) wall creates frustration and aggravation for the mason. This leads to lower productivity and the possibility of mistakes by actions or omissions. Add it all together and you have created the potential for a less than expected quality product. “Congested” is defined as something being too full or overcrowded. There are several ways that CMU wall can suffer from congestion. The main contributors to the clutter in the CMU wall are the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing trades. Masonry is the only one of the three major wall types that is expected to accommodate their “stuff” as we build the wall. Wood and stud walls are built and then the MEP folks do their rough install. On the other hand, we (masonry) are expected to install piping, boxes, conduit, holes for duct work, etc. the accumulation of these things created congestion. By Don Beers, PE Your family deserves a safer, longer-lasting home that saves you money! The energy efficiency of concrete masonry is one of the reasons it has remained the predominate building material in Florida for the past 70 years. By Don Beers, PE. There are things I always wanted to know about masonry and energy, but could never find the answer. For instance, what do you really save when you insulate the exterior walls of a typical Florida home? Masonry Thermal Mass Research sponsored by MAF & NCMA. As the saying goes, “I am glad you asked that question.” The short answer is “Yes,” there is a designated minimum air space in the code. Many years ago when I was still in school, I had to fight for good grades like everyone else. The problem in my math classes was not just getting the answers correct, but providing the necessary proof for the answers. The teachers did not seem to appreciate my knowledge (or maybe it was my explanation) that if I gave them my proof, I would have to shoot them. I could see their displeasure by the drop in my grade. They finally wore down my resistance, and I decided to see reality and provide the proof with my answers. To find the entire answer, we go to Chapter 12 of TMS 402-13. The actual name is Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures, but you will find I use “TMS 402-13” or the “Code” because it is shorter.
